Are there any drawbacks for placing an alert with the credit bureaus?

There are a few credit inquiries on my credit reports that I don’t know anything about. I suspect that I might be a victim of identity theft even though no negative items have showed up yet. I am considering placing an alert with the credit bureaus, but I’m not sure if this will have a negative effect on my credit score. If you have experience with this, could you please let me know?
