Experian deleted an item from my credit report. Does this mean I no longer owe anything?

August 26, 2010 · Posted in Experian Credit Report

I received my credit report from Experian and there was an item on it that showed I owed more money than I thought I did. I requested an investigation and the results said that that the item was deleted. Does this mean that I don’t owe the debt or does it just mean that no one will see it when they run a credit check? Also, do I need to dispute it with the other credit bureaus too?

Deleted just says that the creditor did not respond to the dispute inquiry in a timely manner, or that they did respond and agreed it should be removed.

If they simply did not respond in time, the law states that the item must be removed from your credit report. You owing the money, is a whole other issue. Having the item removed does not mean you don’t owe it, just that it can’t be reported. If they do respond at a later time, there is nothing that says it can’t be placed right back on your report.

The only way to find out if you owe anything, or what the correct amount is, would be to check with the creditor. All Experian knows is that the creditor either didn’t respond, or they agreed that the information was incorrect.

No. It means the listing was deleted from Experian’s data base. Nothing more, nothing less.

It just means that item was removed from your credit report. If you owe someone money, then you still owe them.

All good info here. Just because you get an item deleted from your credit report doesn’t mean you have deleted the debt. In addition, you need to look at your other two credit reports and see if the same listing is being reported on those (Trans Union and Equifax). If you see it there, you will have to dispute with each credit bureau to get the item removed. If there is a real error with your creditor, you need to go directly to them and get that straightened out.
