I need a good credit repair company to help me fix my credit.

I want a credit repair company to help me repair my credit and raise my credit score. There are so many companies online but I don’t know how to make sure which ones are any good. Can someone help me choose a reputable company?

Forget credit repair companies. Most are pure scam. Even the legit ones only do what you can easily do yourself. There are no special letters or secret procedures to clean up your credit.

Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com). If there are errors, dispute them with the credit bureau. Legitimate negative items age off your credit report 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency. The older the item, the less impact on your score.

If any of your derogatory items are single entry items, like medical or utility bills, you can try to negotiate pay for delete agreements (you pay $x and they remove the item) with the collection agencies. This doesn’t work for regularly reported items like credit cards and installment loans. The collection agency can only remove what they report. The original creditor’s charge off would remain.

If you have open credit card accounts, use them and pay off the balance in full every month. If you don’t have a credit card, get one, even if you have to get a secured card — you pay a deposit which is held as collateral against the line of credit. You need to build up at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history to improve your score.

Credit Repair companies have a pretty bad reputation. I’m not saying there aren’t some out there that are legitimate but you will really need to look into them closely. I know a site that is being developed: http://www.creditrepairinfoservices.com but I don’t believe they have launched yet. I have spoken to the President of this company and it sounds as if they are going to be very good and will lead people-step by step- through the credit repair process. I know they have a blog that they were taking email addresses to notify people when they launch.

But what you really should know is that you can do this yourself. You really, truly can. I think what I felt was nice about the above mentioned site is that they are going to lay the steps out for you so you don’t have to spend so much time on research etc.

Another blog with information on how to do a credit dispute is http://www.comebackcredit.com. There are several posts on how to start credit repair. It also has a post that shows simple steps you can take to cause an almost immediate rise in your score.

Good luck! You’ll be surprised at how much you can improve your credit on your own.

Janey made a good point. Before you hire a credit repair company it is definitely worth checking if you can do their work by yourself and save extra money. And even if after that you’ll decide do hire the company you’ll be in a better position when discussing your finances with them.
