Are there any drawbacks for placing an alert with the credit bureaus?

May 25, 2011 · Posted in Identity Theft · 5 Comments

There are a few credit inquiries on my credit reports that I don’t know anything about. I suspect that I might be a victim of identity theft even though no negative items have showed up yet. I am considering placing an alert with the credit bureaus, but I’m not sure if this will have a negative effect on my credit score. If you have experience with this, could you please let me know? Thanks.

Defend Against Identity Theft – Advice From The FTC

    July 27, 2010 · Posted in Identity Theft · 7 Comments

In the course of a busy day, you may write a check at the grocery store, charge tickets to a ball game, rent a car, mail your tax returns, change service providers for your cell phone, or apply for a credit card. Chances are you don’t give these everyday transactions a second thought. But an identity thief does. Identity theft is a serious crime. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years and thousands of dollars cleaning up the mess the thieves have made of a good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims of identity theft may lose job opportunities, be refused loans for education, housing, or cars, and even get arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. Humiliation, anger, and frustration are among the feelings victims experience as they navigate the process of rescuing their identity. Working with other government agencies and organizations, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has produced this booklet to help you remedy the effects of an identity theft. It describes what steps to take, your legal rights, how to handle specific problems you may encounter on the way to clearing your name, and what to watch for in the future.

What can I do about this type of identity theft?

      June 3, 2010 · Posted in Identity Theft · 7 Comments

I have had several accounts opened in my name due to identity theft. I think a corrupt mortgage broker took my information and did this. Anyway, I paid on two accounts for at least six months, which was really stupid. In December I decided that enough was enough so I stopped paying and started to take action. My lawyer says that these can still be proven, but it seems hopeless. Could somebody that works in this field or has experience with this give me some advice?

I’m a victim, but I’ve done all the damage control possible in terms of bank accounts and credit reports. I’m just wondering what other harm the thief could do to me.

If my credit report is flagged and he or she tries to apply for a cell phone, medical insurance, or book a flight — will I be notified?

Is that credit report alert only a defense against fraud or all cases of identity theft?

Identity Theft Prevention, Credit Reports and Fraud Alerts

From the US Treasury Dept. Explains how to obtain free credit reports from the credit bureaus. Also explains how Fraud Alerts work and how to activate them.  Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft can cost you time and money. It can destroy your credit and ruin your good name. Deter identity thieves by safeguarding your information. ■ Shred financial documents and paperwork with personal information before you discard them. ■ Protect your Social Security number. Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet or write your Social Security number on a check. Give it out only if absolutely necessary or ask to use another identifier. ■ Don’t give out personal information on the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet unless you know who you are dealing with. ■ Never click on links sent in unsolicited emails; instead, type in a web address you know. Use firewalls, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software to protect your home computer; keep them up-to-date. Visit OnGuardOnline.gov for more information. ■ Don’t use an obvious password like your birth date, your mother’s maiden name

Someone used my social security number to apply for SBC and Direct TV. I never receive bills from them. When I found out about these accounts, they already showed as collection on my credit report. These are having a negative effect on my credit. I called up the collection agency for SBC and told them this is not my account but they are not willing to remove it. I called the Federal Trade Commission but they said that they couldn’t do anything about this. I tried to contact a free legal aide but they didn’t return my call! How can I remove these identity theft accounts?
